    Erin Boot by Old Gringo

There are a ton of Old Gringo boots out there.

I think their design work is hit and miss. Old Gringo at its best is timely and hip…keeping up better with fashion and colors than everybody in the boot biz. Other times, their off kilter styles kinda wobble, and it seems like some of their designs just doesn’t sit quite right on a cowboy boot. (…and I can’t say I’ve forgiven them for their sexy COWgirl boot years ago.)

BUT, I do like to give credit when credit is due… the new Erin cowboy boot is brilliant. Old Gringo uses its heavy monochrome stitching like tooling across the boot’s vamp and the collar with florals and scrolls. Box toe.

A “shelf” boot which evokes handcraft, without resorting to bad embossing or hurried handmade copies.  Well done.

    Tony Lama Black Boot

    - I’m just gonna come out and say it… this is what Lucchese boots should cost.

    - This pair of boots reminds me of a lucky penny you’d find on the street, and that makes me happy.

    - Best buy. Every guy should own a pair of black cowboy boots. Wear ‘em, thrash ‘em …don’t get attached. Leave them behind somewhere, on the way to someplace else.

    Be a Boot Star

I love the texture of these “Petate” boots. If my size 5 feet were one size bigger, I think I’d wear them all the time.

They’re kinda cool and breezy like a wicker chair, but wait… you could add layer upon layer in this fall, turning these boots into best pals for your favorite tweedy jacket. Yep.

Season after season, the Exclusive Boot Star Custom Designs impress. Old Gringo styles, you won’t find anywhere else. Everyday rock star.

(P.S. I’m still wearing my last Boot Star purchase. Love ‘em)

    Cowboy Boots at 6pm

Hey! Remember those Old Gringo and Liberty Boots you wanted last year? …before the whole world told you to put your money back in your pocket? (Sad trombone, via Maggie)

Well, I’m giving you one last chance.

6pm sells mens, womens and kids cowboy boots at up to 75% off retail. Here’s your chance to be twice the rockstar at half the price (…or yeah, you could get a couple more pairs of the same Ariat’s yer wearing now. Geez.)

Your size is selling quick, better hurry.

    Cowboy Boot Pick @ Zappos.com

I found this cowgirl boot hidden on the sale rack at Zappos.com. (Fellas, your boots are here.)

I like ‘em. I especially like how Frye replaced the toebug with rivets. This is one of those boots that looks better with wear. Trust me. Without any lining leather the tops will get a groovy slouch to them. Urban, modern. Kinda post-western. Not only that, but cool in the summertime.

Frye has a long history and vast style library to inspire its innovation. When they stay true to their sturdy Western look their design have real lasting power. Frye can make a tiny change in a piece of hardware or a color… and I’ll ooh-and-ahh all over again.

When I see ventilated boots like this one, it makes me think of boots made by James Leddy Boots (photo below) …or Ammons Boot Company.

    Liberty? Death? …why not both?

Turn to page 160 of my book and let’s celebrate the “Day of the Dead.”

62 Muertos” by Liberty Boot Co. The human brain is hardwired to find and recognize a human face, making this tooled pair more playful than gruesome.

Many skull boots end up walkin’ a fine line between cowboy and pirate. Not these, despite the skull and cross bones. Liberty boots always have a good recognizable cowboy boot shape… with pointed toe, scalloped top, and underslung heel. (Everyone knows a pirate prefers low heels and big wide toes and a sloppy fit… mostly because he always gets his boots off some soggy dead guy.)

Cowboy, rebel, outlaw…each accepts his fate. Death is a border we cross alone…a metaphoric and inescapable frontier.

Liberty makes boots for rock and roll stars and ornery-types like you. Now, you can find a few of Liberty Boot Co.’s most popular styles at Zappos.com. Look for the “multi*view” icon. Click it and you’ll get a 360 degree view of every cowboy boot Zappos sells.

Free shipping both ways, now that rocks.

    Cowboy Boots: Party Attire

One advantage to me taking a trip is… it gets me out of the house and into western wear stores.

So what’s new? The word on the street is PATENT LEATHER. Yep. High gloss. High style… in black, and even lipstick pink. The Lucchese patent leather cowboy boot is mucho glamorous with a smidge of rowdy. Impervious to everyday champagne spills.

Why haven’t you seen more of these in the stores? ‘Cuz they sell out fast, that’s why.

For the biggest selection of styles & sizes, your best bet might be to buy online.

    Baby's got

When I was in Wichita Falls at a well-known western wear store called The Cow Lot, I asked “Bugger” (that’s what people call him)…What’s popular these days?

He showed me these funny looking “cowgirl boots” with a big lug sole and painted-on ostrich skin. Hmmmmm.

“Sellin’ these like crazy. The girls just gotta have ‘em.”

“Really?” I said…kinda scrunching up my nose. “Why do you think that is?”

“Well…” he said. “I’ve been wearing boots for 50 years…and sometimes you just want something a little different.”

Bugger is a wise man…and he knows his western wear.

I can’t say I was a fan of those “FatBaby” boots I saw in Wichita Falls, but that was then, and this is now…and Ariat’s come out with something new.

Recently, I saw some Ariat Baby Bucks and I have to admit they were the best looking boots on the shelf…cowgirl-wise. (See more styles)

These boots have got some irony stitched into ‘em …the round toes, rhinestone studs and heart-shaped top pulls show the urban influences of Doc Martens and my pretty pony.

These aren’t boot design hand-me-downs. They’re new and different, one could say…a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll.

…and it’s true, the girls love ‘em!

(For those of you who want to see the Ariat Baby Bucks for yourself…step into your nearest Boot Barn.)

    “Countrypolitan”

In the last couple of weeks I’ve heard the word “Countrypolitan” maybe five times, even found myself using it in casual conversation at a party last night.

What is “Countrypolitan?” The term has often been used to describe “pop”ular country music. I just saw Ray Price perform (more on this later)…Mr. Price is old school “Countrypolitan”. Singing songs about misery and love gone wrong…no longer with yodels or twangs of his early days, but a nice looking suit and a smooth voice and style…still improving with age at 79.

You can see “Countrypolitan” now emerging in cowboy boot design. Country music has always supplied Western glamour. “Countrypolitan” is glamour without the “bling.” The new Lucchese Stiletto Boots are a good example. These cowboy boots have tall tops, collars, pointy toes, wrinkles and toebugs, but they take a fashion detour with their 3 1/2 inch heels, and sleek stage soles. They are “cowboy boots” only upon second glance….at first they look are mainstream…that’s countrypolitan. Even without exotic hides, rhinestones or metal tips these new boots takes sides with form not function. They pay tribute to their country roots, but from a safe distance.
