Vegetarian Cowboy Boots
Actor Joaquin Phoenix recently caused quite a stir when he insisted on wearing plastic cowboy boots in his upcoming Johnny Cash biopic.Whether you call them vegetarian, vegan, cruelty-free...or just plain ol' plastic, finding leather look-alike boots often isn't easy.
Boy, not like five years ago...back then it was easy. In their die-hard attempts to reduce production costs, nearly all the large-scale boot manufacturers had increased their use of vinyls, plastics, and cardboard. Many popular name brand boots were being made solely from "man-made materials."
But today there is China...and China changes everything. Now, with cheaper leather supplies and labor costs you can get a Justin brand genuine cow-hide boot for just $59.99.For faux-leather cowboy boots I recommend you try your local Target store and look for their low-cost Xhilaration® brand...or turn to a dedicated specialty online retailer like Alternative Outfitters or VeganEssentials.com.
For a wider selection of styles ...don't overlook ebay. Try keyword searches like cowboy boots manmade ...then narrow your search for women's or men's styles. Get creative. Even a search with "cowboy boots leather-like" will bring up different pairs to choose from.
If it is important to you to have absolutely no animal products used in your boots -- double check the boot heel, make sure the manufacturer has not used a thin leather vaneer in an attempt to mimic a traditional stacked leather heel.
One more thing to consider in your purchase -- make sure you are happy with the fit of your boots, man-made materials do not have the same give or stretch that leather does.

Guess that Johnny Cash movie is one more movie I won't see.
Clear proof that you don't have to have brains to be a movie star (Tom Cruise and John Travolta demonstrated that a long time ago).
I think it's awesome that he hade fake boots, I'm a vegetarian and an actor.
I love it!
so, being vegetarian makes a person dumb? interesting. boycotting a movie because a vegetarian is in it? also interesting. how is it not a good thing that people have the options to live their lives the way that they prefer?
There seems to be a fair bit of evidence that Johnny Cash himself was a vegitraian. Can anyone confirm?
Not sure whether or not Cash was a vegetarian but my favorite recent quote from him was "I did not vote for Mr. Bush; I'll leave it at that."
Johnny Cash is vegan.
Wow there sure are a lot of ignorant people on this board.
The first 2 comments go without saying. Yes because a person has strong moral convictions and refuses to be a part of the murder and torture of animals he is therefore dumb. That makes perfect sense. You people are really sad and pathetic to make such ridiculous comments. I LOVE the fact that Joaquin stands up for animals and for what he believes in.
Secondly Johnny Cash was in NO WAY a vegan or vegetarian. Whoever wrote that must be smoking crack. He was a hunter and meat eater. He was also a very interesting person and very talented. I very much enjoyed the movie and both Reece and Joaquin did a great job.
Steve Earle has repeatedly told a story about Johnny Cash inviting him to enjoy some of June Carter's brisket. I doubt she used a tofu brisket-ish recipe.
It seems really funny that anyone would be bothered by what the actor playing him wore on his feet. Off the topic, did anyone ever see the X-files where the actor playing a zombie in a movie takes a bite out of someone's shoulder, and then spits it out and storms off because it was made out of turkey instead of tofurky? Now that's funny.
Well, not to bring up the “liberal vs conservative argument” or anything, oh ok that’s what I am doing… It seams to be a modern conservative view (neo-con) that if someone has strong convictions (that aren’t anti-peace, anti-choice, or anti-“insert race, gender, or sexual orientation here”) you should ‘boycott’ them. As a true conservative, it is my firm belief that these people have no idea what they are talking about. A conservative value would be that EVERYONE is free to practice their beliefs. Without exception. Without regulation. And the very exercising of a belief is the most patriotic thing an American can do. If someone wants to boycott a movie, because someone exercised their freedom to choose a particular type of clothing (based on their own personal moral beliefs), than that very person is not only exercising their own freedom of belief but the belief they are prescribing to is a belief in fascism. Everyone should wear the same thing I do, and I will utilize political power to make them see it my way. This, is the most un-conservative of all stances. Unfortunately, it is how “conservatives” behave these days.
Merry Meet,
Being a vegan and a practicing Witch (yeah, not much of a mainstreamer) I love the fact that Joaquin also has enough morality to stand up for what he believes in. Not everyone has a taste for dead beings. Please do not flame me -- the Burning Times are indeed over.
Bright Blessings to All (even those who are about to flame me anyway),
Raine Childe

I wish I could find vegan friendly cow boy boots, I've googled to no end and only found one really ugly blue pair. the ones on Alternative Outfitters are no longer available and they would have been perfect :(
